  Joshua Reifler Biography:

Joshua Reifler received his Juris Doctor from Albany Law School in spring of 2010.  He has been admitted to practice law in New Jersey and New York.  Joshua also holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications from Rutgers University.

Pre-Law Work Experience:

Prior to attending law school Joshua worked for two years as an Assistant Account Manager at LegalVoice public relations.  During his time in the field Joshua was involved in all areas of account management including: writing and editing case studies, press releases, and pitch letters; contacting and developing strong relationships with legal news media; development of his firm’s secondary media sources (blogs, ezines, news websites); and researching trade shows / editorial calendars for relevant client marketing opportunities.

Academic Success In Law School:

During law school, Joshua sought out challenging opportunities and classes which provided hands-on development as a legal scholar.  He has taken advanced courses in Criminal Procedure, Appellate Advocacy, and been recognized multiple times on the Albany Law School “Dean’s List” for high marks.

During his first year in law school, Joshua participated in the Gabrielli Appellate Advocacy competition, where he competed against fellow law students in arguing appellate briefs before a panel of practicing attorneys in a mock hearing.  The following year, Joshua was the recipient of the Charles H. Revson Public Interest Fellowship after winning a legal essay competition focusing on legal public service.

Joshua has also worked as a research assistant for Professor Stanley Adelman of Albany Law School.  During his time as an assistant he helped research and prepare legal summaries of key decisions from the 2008-2009 Supreme Court term.  These summaries were included in the Fourth Edition of Professor Adelman’s textbook, ‘Criminal Procedure: The Post-Investigative Process, Cases, and Materials’.

Internships in Federal Government – The United States Senate:

In 2008, Joshua interned in the United States Senate for the Honorable Robert Menendez of New Jersey.  During his time working under the direction of the Senator’s D.C. staff, he received training and education as to the working of government and the development of new legislation.  He directly supported the Senator’s legislative staff by helping to draft speeches, create policy issue briefs, and prepare summaries of pending legislation.  Additionally, Joshua attended staff briefings where he prepared issue summaries and listened to speakers from agencies including the U.S. Security and Exchange Commission and the Drug Enforcement Agency.

Internships in Criminal Law – The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office & The Federal Public Defender (NDNY):

Joshua has the experience of diverse internships in public service; he has previously interned for both the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Federal Public Defender’s Office (Northern District of New York).

During his time with the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, Joshua researched and composed  briefs for direct appeals, motions to suppress, and motions for post-conviction relief.  As an intern, Joshua appeared and argued in de novo trials before New Jersey Superior Court judges (DWI, simple assault, harassment, theft by deception, motor vehicle offenses, et al).  He also appeared in place of a municipal prosecutor on behalf of the State and conducted a bench trial in municipal court.

As an intern for the Federal Public Defender’s Office, Joshua supported the Public Defender in the representation of indigent persons charged with federal crimes by constructing pre-trial motions and actively observing in court.  In addition, he helped draft legal memoranda by proof-reading and fact-checking legal materials.

Beyond Law School:

Since being admitted as a member of the New Jersey bar in January, Joshua has actively sought out new legal opportunities in the public and private sector. He has volunteered his time as an attorney at Legal Services by assisting low income-qualifying clients in the resolution of their housing law issues and worked as a freelance researcher for practicing attorneys. Joshua is currently employed as a Legal Data Analyst for Bloomberg, L.P. in New York City.

Joshua leads an active life as an artist and musician.  He currently contributes articles on music, fashion, and culture for the men’s fashion magazine Swipelife.com and plays bass in a post-hardcore band.
